Getting Ready, With a Little Help From Family

Who says you need a traditional wedding ceremony to have an unforgettable wedding day?

For Alejandra and Jordan, August 9, 2025, was all about celebrating their marriage with the people who mattered most. Instead of following a conventional wedding-day timeline, they brought together meaningful family traditions, beautiful waterfront portraits, and an evening of good food, heartfelt speeches, and dancing.

And with Wasaga Beach as the backdrop, there was plenty of room to make the day their own.

The afternoon began with Alejandra getting ready alongside her mother, grandmother, and a close friend.

There’s something special about those quieter moments before a celebration begins. The final touches, the familiar faces, and the little interactions that often become some of the most meaningful photographs of the day.

From there, I headed to Jordan's parents' home, where he was getting ready with help from his father and Jon.

With no formal wedding party, the focus was on the people closest to them rather than a long list of traditional wedding-day roles.

A First Look by the Water

One of the highlights of the afternoon was Alejandra and Jordan's first look at Jordan's parents' waterfront home.

With the beach just steps away, we had the opportunity to create portraits along the shoreline and around the property before the celebrations began.

Wasaga Beach offers such a different atmosphere from the urban settings I often photograph in Toronto. The open shoreline, natural light, and relaxed surroundings gave their portraits a beautiful sense of space.

And there's something lovely about choosing a location with a personal connection rather than simply picking a scenic backdrop.

Honouring the Family With Tea

Following their first look and portraits, Alejandra and Jordan gathered with their families for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at the house.

The ceremony included their parents and extended family, creating an opportunity to honour loved ones and share a meaningful tradition before the evening reception.

I always appreciate photographing celebrations that bring different traditions and personal priorities together.

These moments are about so much more than the photographs themselves. They're about relationships, family history, and the people who have been part of a couple's journey.

Afterward, we made time for family portraits before everyone headed to the reception.

A Wedding Reception at Wasaga Stars Arena

The celebration continued at Wasaga Stars Arena, where Alejandra and Jordan welcomed their guests for cocktails and an evening reception.

Rather than hosting a formal ceremony or a grand entrance, they kept the atmosphere relaxed and centred on spending time together.

Their brothers took on the role of MCs, adding a personal touch to the evening's celebrations.

The reception featured speeches throughout the night, giving family and friends opportunities to share stories, offer congratulations, and celebrate the newlyweds.

And while they skipped some wedding traditions, they kept others that mattered to them.

Alejandra and Jordan shared their first dance, followed by special parent dances before the dance floor opened for the evening.

Because that's the beauty of planning your own wedding celebration: you get to decide which traditions belong in your story.

A Celebration That Was Entirely Theirs

What stood out about Alejandra and Jordan's day was how naturally they brought everything together.

A quiet afternoon with family. Portraits by the water. A meaningful tea ceremony. An evening filled with speeches, dancing, and familiar faces.

There was no need to squeeze their celebration into a traditional wedding format.

Instead, they created a day that reflected their relationship and the people who mattered most to them.

And those are exactly the kinds of celebrations I love documenting.

Because at the end of the day, wedding photography isn't about checking off a list of traditions. It's about preserving the moments that make your celebration yours.
