Ben & Katherine

Ceremony & Reception Venue: Calamus Estate Winery

An intimate Niagara-region wedding
Some weddings are all about grand entrances and perfectly choreographed moments. Others are about gathering your favourite people, sharing good food, and seeing where the evening takes you.
For Ben and Katherine, their wedding at Calamus Estate Winery in Jordan, Ontario, was all about the latter.
That summer, Ontario was experiencing the effects of widespread wildfires, and the air was thick with smoke and haze. The usual clear skies were replaced by a soft, muted atmosphere that settled over the vineyards.
But a little haze wasn't about to stop a wedding celebration.
Despite the smoky skies, Ben and Katherine and their guests carried on with the festivities, making the most of every moment. The haze even gave their portraits an unexpectedly atmospheric quality, with softened light and a dreamy backdrop across the winery's landscape.
It was a reminder that you can't always control the conditions on your wedding day, but you can still make beautiful memories in the middle of them.
With approximately 75 guests, a beautiful 45-acre winery, and a celebration that put family and friends at the centre of everything, their day was a wonderful mix of romance, personality, and relaxed fun.
And when your wedding venue has its own observatory? Well, that's a pretty fantastic bonus.
A Vineyard Wedding With Room to Breathe
Nestled in Ontario's Niagara wine region, Calamus Estate Winery offered Ben and Katherine a beautiful setting for their entire celebration.
With vineyards, open landscapes, and charming winery spaces, there was no need to travel between locations. Everything happened in one place, giving the couple more time to enjoy their day and spend time with their guests.
We began with separate portraits of Ben and his groomsmen, followed by Katherine and her bridesmaids.
Rather than scheduling getting-ready photographs or a first look, they kept the afternoon simple and saved the moment of seeing each other for their ceremony.
Sometimes, less scheduling means more room for the moments that happen naturally.
A School Bus Full of Wedding Guests
One of the more memorable details of their day was the arrival of guests by school bus.
There's something wonderfully charming about a busload of people arriving at a winery dressed for a wedding. It's practical, a little unexpected, and exactly the sort of moment I love photographing.
As friends and family gathered, the focus shifted to candid interactions: conversations, laughter, reunions, and all those little moments that happen before the main celebration begins.
Ben and Katherine had made it clear that photographs of their guests were especially important to them. And I love that.
Because while the wedding is about two people getting married, it's also about everyone who showed up to celebrate them.
Saying “I Do” at Calamus Estate Winery
The late-afternoon ceremony brought everyone together against the beautiful backdrop of the winery.
Afterward, we planned a group photograph from the upper balcony, bringing the entire celebration into one frame.
There's something special about a photograph that includes everyone who shared your wedding day. Years later, it's not just a picture of a crowd. It's a little piece of your history.
We also made time for family portraits before guests settled into cocktail hour.
Vineyard Portraits and a Little Golden Magic
While guests enjoyed cocktails, we stepped away for wedding party portraits and photographs of Ben and Katherine together.
The winery's landscape offered plenty of room to work with natural light, open skies, and the surrounding greenery.
And as the evening moved toward sunset, the vineyard provided another opportunity for romantic portraits.
I always love finding a balance between beautiful couple photographs and the candid moments unfolding throughout the day.
You deserve both: photographs that make you stop and stare, and photographs that make you remember exactly how everything felt.
Good Food + Good Company
Ben and Katherine's reception kept the focus on the things they valued most.
There was no elaborate grand entrance or long list of wedding traditions to work through.
Instead, guests gathered for a four-course dinner, speeches, and an evening spent celebrating together.
With family and friends sharing stories and the newlyweds enjoying their celebration, there was plenty happening beyond the traditional wedding-day highlights.
And that's why candid coverage matters so much.
A wedding isn't just the ceremony, the portraits, or the first dance. It's also the expressions across the dinner table, the unexpected laughter, and the little interactions you might not even notice while they're happening.
From the Dance Floor to the Stars
As evening arrived, Ben and Katherine's celebration moved into its final chapter.
Their plans included a first dance, an open dance floor, a bonfire, and one particularly unusual feature of Calamus Estate Winery: its observatory.
It's not every day that a wedding venue offers the possibility of looking up at the night sky after celebrating with your favourite people.
And for someone who loves creative photography, the possibility of ending a wedding with astrophotography is pretty exciting.
From the vineyards below to the stars above, it was a fitting way to round out a celebration with so much personality.
What I appreciated most about Ben and Katherine's wedding was how much thought they put into the experience of their guests.
From arranging transportation to making time for candid photographs of the people around them, their priorities were clear.
They wanted a celebration that felt welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable.
And that's one of my favourite things about wedding photography: the opportunity to document not only two people in love, but the community of people who helped shape their story.
A vineyard, a school bus, a room full of loved ones, and perhaps a few stars to finish the night.
Not a bad way to celebrate a wedding.
