A Garden Grown With Love
Some weddings are planned around grand venues, elaborate decorations, and carefully choreographed traditions.
And then there are weddings like Katarina and Norman's, where the setting itself has a story to tell.
For their intimate Richmond Hill wedding, Katarina's father grew a garden filled with colourful flowers, creating a beautiful backdrop for a celebration that was anything but conventional.
With approximately 30 of their closest family members and friends, Katarina and Norman chose to celebrate their relationship in the comfort of a family backyard. No grand entrances, no elaborate reception schedule, and no pressure to follow traditions that didn't feel like them.
Just good company, a garden full of colour, and two people celebrating the kind of love that feels like home.
One of the most memorable details of Katarina and Norman's wedding wasn't something ordered from a wedding vendor.
It was the garden.
Katarina's father had grown an abundance of colourful flowers, turning the backyard into a vibrant setting for their celebration.
There's something incredibly personal about that. Flowers are beautiful on their own, but knowing the time and care that went into growing them gives the setting a meaning that goes beyond decoration.
And for a photographer? All that colour was an absolute dream.
With lush greenery, colourful blooms, and a wooded trail behind the property, we had plenty of natural beauty to work with without ever needing to travel to another location.
A First Look, a Red Dress, and a Little Magic
We began the afternoon with Katarina and Norman's first look, followed by portraits around the backyard and the nearby wooded trail.
And we need to talk about that dress.
Katarina wore a dramatic red gown that stood out beautifully against the greenery and colourful flowers. The flowing fabric brought so much movement and personality to their photographs, especially when we played with the shape of the dress among the garden blooms.
It was bold, romantic, and completely her own.
Their portraits were a reminder that wedding photography doesn't have to look a certain way to be beautiful. Sometimes, stepping outside the traditional white dress and classic venue creates something wonderfully memorable.
A Backyard Celebration Without the Rulebook
As guests began arriving, the backyard gradually filled with familiar faces, conversations, and the relaxed atmosphere Katarina and Norman had envisioned.
Their wedding wasn't built around a formal bridal party or an elaborate procession.
Instead, the focus was on spending time with the people closest to them and celebrating their relationship in a way that felt natural.
Their informal ceremony took place in the backyard, surrounded by the garden and their loved ones.
Afterward, everyone came together for a casual evening of food, conversation, and speeches.
There was no first dance, no cake-cutting ceremony, and no packed entertainment schedule.
And none of those things were missing.
They simply weren't part of the wedding Katarina and Norman wanted.
A Wedding That Grew From the Heart
One of the things I appreciate most about intimate backyard weddings is how much personality they can hold.
A familiar home becomes a wedding venue. A garden becomes the backdrop for portraits. The people you love gather in a space already filled with memories.
Katarina and Norman's celebration embraced that beautifully.
Their wedding wasn't about putting on a production. It was about celebrating a relationship that felt comfortable, familiar, and genuine—the kind of love they described as a boy-next-door, girl-next-door story.
And sometimes, that's more than enough.
When I think about Katarina and Norman's wedding, I think about the colours. The vibrant red dress. The flowers growing throughout the backyard. The greenery surrounding their portraits. But more than anything, I think about the care that went into creating the space where they celebrated.
Their wedding is a lovely reminder that meaningful celebrations don't have to be elaborate. Sometimes, the most memorable details are the ones that come from the people who love you.
And sometimes, those details are quite literally grown in your own backyard.
